Fr. Aloysius Lwanga Bukenya, born at Jjongoza Village, Kalisizo sub-county, Rakai District. In the photo, he was sharing at a Christmas meal with the student seminarians of the Apostles of Jesus Seminary Bukinda – Kabale, where he served as Rector from 2003 – 2006

Some members of the Jjongoza Community at the village school which started in January 2004 at the Initiative of the Tusitukire Wamu Women’s Group. The women saw an urgent need to build a school as a strategy of bringing education closer to the community. It was also envisaged as a channel of bringing development to the village.

Some children of the Jjongoza Village, some of these benefit from the village school, others have to walk long distances to primary schools at Kalisizo or Kyango, or Kikondo via unsafe bushes. Those who walk to Kalisizo have to walk a stretch of the Masaka – Bukoba Road surviving very fast motor traffic. The initiative of the village school is advantageous to many children of the Jjongoza village.

School in the making. In the background are the two incomplete buildings of the school. One of them is already being used by pupils in the primary school section: from the first to the fourth year. The pupils in the fourth year will hopefully join the fifth primary school year. The school building have been constructed with funds and resources raised by the members of the local community. The members of the community are interested in completing the school structures, but they need extra financial support for the following:

  1. to complete the two constructions

  2. to furnish the school with teaching equipment and books, pencils and pens, and charts.

Thanks to the contributions made by the Harambee Center in Portland Oregon, their extension of friendship has been cause of encouragement. Thanks too to the Rotary Clubs of Kajjansi and Brunswick Grand Maine, who are funding a sanitation facility and a water tank. There is urgent need for completing the construction of the buildings and of providing teaching resources.

In the photo are the children of St. Michael’s Jjongoza Village school together with Mary Tennant from the Rotary Club of Brunswick, and Brother Francis Bluin (Director of Kisubi Brothers Centre of Uganda Martyrs University. They visited the Jjongoza school in May 2007, and started a process of getting a Rotary Grant to pay for a sanitation facility and a water tank. In this project they are collaborating with Fr. Aloysius Bukenya, who belongs to the Rotary Club of Kajjansi.

In the blue Gomessi (attire) is Mary Mukabubbu together with other members of the village community. They were participating in the village community meeting during which they were assessing the needs of the school.

The headteacher (in blue) is explaining the state of the school to the visiting Rotarian Mary Tennant. Rotarian Ssenkindu (Kalisizo RC) interpreting into Luganda the headteacher’s message.

Part of the school building which requires funding for completion: Roofing, plastering, flooring, and painting, and stocking with educational/teaching materials.

Two community leader: Mrs. Lusiba Namatovu, president of the provisional Jjongoza Rotary Community Corp; and Mr. Marsiale Lwanga Ssalongo (my father) the Community Catechist. He is a consultant on many community matters. He is a keen educator who has invested much of his energies of education of his children and of his neighbours. He is a key supporter of the village development projects.

The ideas for protected water springs, water tanks, and sanitation facilities in schools will promote the communities wellbeing.
